Opening this incredibly gorgeous Christmas card was a breath of fresh air after all the clamoring sale flyers, garish ads, and bills we got today in the mail! One last $256 bill from Dan breaking his two front teeth last spring and one MORE $123 bill from Natalie's latest kidney infection... and then this beauty from my demo friend Diane!
I would have enjoyed ANY mail that was not a bill at that point, but to get this lovely thing was a really uplifting moment. I'd like to take a moment to encourage you to not let yourself slip into automaton mode when you are making your cards this year. Don't just whip them together, slap a stamp on them and dump them in the box.We put so much time and thought (and money, let's face it) into what designs we're going to make, and then we end up slapping them together in a big crookedy hurry at the eleventh hour.
Get them done, yes, but try to remember to do them mindfully. The point of handmade is not just that you did it cheaper or better or faster or cuter, or even that YOU had fun doing it. It's that you took a moment--an irretrievable moment that will never come again--out of your life, to make something heartfelt, for someone you care enough about to make sure they have a tangible reminder that you want them, personally, to have a great Christmas.
Neither my cards or possibly yours will ever look like Diane's... but we can still infuse them with all the love and care that she does, with such spectacular results. Stop and smell the roses this Christmas season... put your to-do list down and give your shopping-weary feet a rest while you add a little sparkle to those cards or go the extra mile to stamp snowflakes on the envelopes.
