31 Pages in 31 Days: day thirty-one

Yayayayayay! We did it! 31 Pages in 31 Days is officially accomplished. I hope you have just loved all the creative inspiration during the month of August 2012, and if you are just seeing this post for the first time somewhere down the road, be sure to look in the archives and see the entire set of 31 posts.

I wanted to finish on a high note! So I actually have SIX PROJECTS to share. I know--over-achiever!!

Today's page is a super fun grunge-themed layout with all sorts of interesting elements to it. We have techniques: stamping, tearing, sponging, spatter, direct-to-paper, sewing;  We have fibers and metals: muslin cloth, seam binding, cotton sewing thread, linen thread, stitched grosgrain, petwer brads and a pewter jumbo eyelet. And we have a fun and easy  layout, for which I have a sketch!All the photo boxes are 3 inches square.

I absolutely adore this stamp set because I am a total Anglophile. England is where I want to go more than anywhere else in the world! I've been on English soil on two separate occasions but only for  layovers, and the one time we did manage to get out of the airport, it was at night, so everything was closed. We did get to see the Underground, Big Ben, the outside of Buckingham Palace, met two bobbies in uniform, and had fish n' chips at a little shop before zipping back to catch our flight (obviously this was pre-9/11.) It was absolutely tantalizing for this history nerd. I really reeeeeeallly hope Stampin' Up takes me there someday!

I love this saying so much, I made this 5x7 photo frame for my house... the sentiment is just so perfect for today. Bombs might not be literally falling on our houses like they were on England back then, but there is much to be anxious about these days. Ok, we're officially DONE with 31 Pages in 31 Days! I know, it kinda makes you sad.... but try to keep calm and carry on. It will be ok! And don't worry--I have ridiculous amounts of fun planned for you in September. Honestly, I am besotted with my job--where else would let me play with paper and stamps all day and party all night? There is not enough time in the world to make all the cute things I have seen. Oh my, we're getting close now! For the past thirty days, I've been running a fun summer blog series called 31 Page in 31 Days, in conjunction with my Scrapbooking Summer School classes that ran four Thursday nights in August. It has been QUITE the journey--can't wait for that final page count! And even more astounding is that I haven't missed a single day!! I hope you've just loved all the paper inspiration and even if your August has not been conducive to scrapping, I'm sure you've got a bunch of ideas stored away for the moment you're able to enter the crafting zone.
Today's page is a single layout with bold lines. I used Polka Dot Parade papers in Rich Razzleberry, Old Olive, and Pumpkin Pie together with Whisper White in an asymmetrical graph design.To break up the severity of the layout, I added an easy ribbon rosette in tone-on-tone Rich Razzleberry, using the fun new Jumbo Sticky Rounds from the 2012 Holiday Catalog. Those are pretty addicting to make!

Then my old pal Crystal Effects popped in to highlight the simple headline, cut from my Big Shot with the new Typeset Alphabet. It adds shine and contrast without adding a lot of busy-ness (important with all those polka dots!)

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-nine

Hi ya'll! Welcome back to 31 Pages in 31 Days, my summer scrapbooking blog series for August 2012. If you're just joining us, be sure to look in the archives for all the pages and spreads you missed!

I mentioned our Week One homework assignment previously... this was my original "inspiration" sample to help them get their juices flowing as to how they could incorporate at least three of the four elements I had given them. I took my colors directly from the Designer Series Papers (from the Floral District collection) and I used some of every coordinating ribbon I had in my stamp room to weave and wrap around the Hearts Collection Framelit die cut. Kinda fun! Mini glue dots made it a lot less putzy than it could have been, so don't be afraid to try it yourself. It looks pretty neat! 

Only two days left! What's been your favorite page or double-page layout so far? Have you been following along at home? 31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-eight

I know I haven't posted many little boy pages lately, so hopefully you will think this fun layout totally makes up for that oversight! I got this cool card from one of my downline team, where she had used an Anywhere Glue Stick to attach aluminum foil to cardstock and then run it through the Big Shot with the Houndstooth embossing folder while still wet. Doesn't it look amazing? Love it!

And yeppers, I checked and regular aluminum foil is acid-free and safe for scrapping. So I designed this racing page around that card and took my title cues from the racecar in the Need for Speed stamp set (page 68 in the 2012-13 Catalog).

I love the way the Red Glimmer Paper strip and the foil "chrome" kick the bling level way up on this page, and the addition of the narrow grosgrain ribbon stripes helped echo the theme as well.

I hope you've enjoyed the series of pages I have made showing how I recycled cards and card elements into my scrapbooking. Only three pages left in the 31 Pages in 31 Day summer blog series! And we're going out with a bang, of course! See you tomorrow.

I guess I blinked

Awww... my babies are so adorable. Can I keep calling them my babies when they are third graders and fifth graders? They just insist on growing, and there's not a blessed thing I can do about it except take pictures.

Today I got to take my traditional front-porch-steps first-day-of-school pictures. Our foliage has mostly recovered from the drought, or this wouldn't have been too pretty a venue!



Dan has a locker for the first time this year, plus he moved across the hall in our school to the side where the 5-8th graders are. He'll also be in band (looks like his instrument of choice is going to be the French Horn). He will hopefully be selected for the Lego science team, which will be a big commitment but lots of fun. we're not sure yet about sports (he'd rather not). Big time! Now if we can just master that combination lock!!

Dan's new teacher and I went to school together way back when... fun! She's the principal's wife, though--better be on your best behavior, Dan!!

Natalie has her first guy teacher, Dan's beloved Mr. Jones. She's a little bit nervous about this and is very glad she'll still get to give Mrs. Johnson hugs every day. She is also starting piano lessons this year (wants to learn violin but we'll start with learning to read music, first!). She was my little one who couldn't WAIT to be back in school. She has been sooooo bored.
No parking-lot sniffles today for this mama... I did my tear-shedding last week when I paid for Dan's first pair of shoes from the men's department. BOO HOO HOO!! How can this gigantic young man and stylish young lady be my little boy and baby girl? Dang it... I blinked.

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-seven

Welcome to Day 27 in my summer blog series, 31 Pages in 31 Days! On the third session of Scrapbooking Summer school I gave my ladies their homework assignment: Chipboard. As you might know, you can paint, stamp, sponge, sand, distress, ink and even emboss on chipboard, and it has an awesome "just right" texture and height that adds a professional look to any page. So they took home their baggies of assorted chipboard and set to work! It was amazing to see what all they had come up with to do with their pieces!

Here's the "Animal Talk" page I did for mine (I do everything I make them do!) and I really like how it turned out. The chipboard assortment pack I got had some little pennants in it, so that was a no-brainer for me, especially since I have the Pennant Builder Punch as well.

Let me just take a minute to say you will ADORE using chipboard with the new Firm Foam ink pads! It was perfectly covered with ink with just a single press down onto the pad.I covered the blue ones entirely with ink, and inked just the edges of the white ones with Craft ink so that a little of the natural chipboard color showed through. The tiny little chipboard hearts were inked with the old-style ink pads, so there is a definite fabric pattern pressed into them (kinda cool if you're going for a little distressed look rather than a solid inking).

Then I decorated each pennant a little differently, and strung them onto my page underneath the photo mat. The colors I used for this page were Calypso Coral, Lucky Limemade, Soft Suede and Marina Mist, with a piece of patterned paper from the International Bazaar collection (I used both sides).

Ok! Today is the first day of school for my three (two kids and Daddy), so look out for cute family photos in a couple hours here! And then I'll see you back here tomorrow for the next installment of 31 Pages in 31 Days.

Vintage Bird and Flowers Frame

I am kicking myself that I didn't take a "before" photo of this frame, so you could see exactly how it was transformed in the space of two hours in my craft room yesterday. I bought a distressed wooden frame at Hobby Lobby last weekend in a pretty Baja Breeze color that is my accent in the living room. It had a metal bird and branch, partially covered with truly hideous YELLOW "antique handwriting" paper that just had to go.

I covered the bird first so I wouldn't have to look at the poor thing any longer. I used my last precious scraps of Newsprint Designer Series Paper, which is now retired. I am making do with First Edition papers on my cards, but Stampin' Up, if you're reading this--bring back my vintage newspaper, please! And if anyone has a pack and really loves me, I'd sure be willing to buy it off ya!

I also used up another "last" on this frame--the very last scrap of Blushing Bride cardstock. No other pink would do--I needed that antique-y, grayed-out pink that looks so awesome when sponged. I'm crossing my fingers that sweet peachy pink comes back the next time we have a Color Renovation. I layered the new mini Scallop Circle punch from the Holiday 2012 Catalog with the Boho Blossoms punches and some rhinestone brads to add just a dab of bling.

Then I stamped, sponged, splattered, smeared, splattered some more, sprayed, Mod-Podged, Big-Shotted, texturized, tore, wrinkled and crumpled to my heart's content.... what say you? Good results? I love it. I adore that I can make art for my home with my own two hands. I love that I can take someone else's indifferent canvas and squandered talent and turn it unto something that makes me happy when I see it, that matches my stuff, that means something to me.

I know you all don't have my dream job (although you could--we should chat about that!) and can't sit around crafting all day every day, but I would like to challenge you to make one home decor item for our house per season, this year. Just one piece--maybe an altered frame, maybe a banner, maybe some ornaments for a little tree, or a wreath or maybe even something really fun like stamping on the walls. The rules are all changed. We CAN decorate our homes with things we made ourselves, things we found and repainted, stuff we upcycled or combined or ripped pieces off of.

It doesn't have to be overwhelming or feel like pressure--just one small project you worked on by yourself (or hey, with the kids!) and can display with pride. I remember the first thing I made to display permanently in my house. I was so nervous! People just didn't decorate with things they'd made themselves. But people loved it, and it STILL makes me happy. Take a chance and make some art! After all, as Stampin' Up's latest advertising campaign says, 'EARTH without "ART" is just "EH."'

 

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-six

One of my very favoritest things in the new 2012 Holiday Catalog is the Orchard Harvest Designer Series paper collection. Fall is my favorite time of year, and I just love the colors, so we were bound to hit it off when we met, even before I'd seen the adorable patterns. There's ginghams, stripes, corn, apples, pears, and even cross-stitching in this pack--super cute!

I used the new Core'dinations cardstock in Early Espresso to make my sunflower middles, embossing them with the Perfect Polka Dots folder on the Big Shot. I also used my Big Shot and the Tasteful Trims die to add Very Vanilla rick-rack between some of the strips of patterned papers. It adds a lot of texture and visual interest and, along with the "ruffles," helps counteract the vertical-ness of the page (the photos will help when they are added, too).

Can't believe we have only a few days left in August, and this fun blog series will be at an end! I just adore autumn so I am not sorry to see September 1st arrive each year. I cannot wait to decorate my home and front door with my fall stuff. I probably have twice the number of fall decorations as any other season, including Christmas! So I leave them up from September first all the way through November. No short-cutting Thanksgiving for me!!

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-five

I gave my Scrapbooking Summer School ladies a homework challenge at our first session: to use three of four coordinating elements I gave them to make a page and bring it back to the following class. They had a ton of fun! And the pages were wildly different. So cool to see what they all did with the exact same elements. I had a packet left over, so I made this page up.

The four elements were a piece of Designer Series Paper, a die-cut scalloped Hearts Collection Framelit from the Big Shot, a strip of Floral District Designer Series Fabric, and a piece of Rich Razzleberry taffeta ribbon. I cut the heart apart and just used the scallop edges. I also added some Summer Starfruit Dahlia embellishments to my page and then stamped a title using the pretty Lovely Letters alphabet.

Later I'll post another page made with the same exact challenge, that's completely different from this one. Thanks for popping in for my summer 2012 blog series!

 

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-four

Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning in again for another bit of scrappin' inspiration today! I hope you are enjoying my summer blog series and maybe are even playing along with my Scrapbooking Summer School girls and I as we race towards the finish line! They are all super excited to get so much scrapping accomplished and win their prize for getting 31 pages done in the 31 days of August 2012.

Today's single page layout was again inspired by an old 5x5 card front I received a while back. it is on the left hand side. It made the page sooo easy--all the colors were chosen for me, and all I had to do was add photo boxes and cut out a title on my Big Shot. I needed easy today, because I'm double-booked for tonight (again)... does that ever happen to you? I am not sure if it's worse when you don't want to do either thing, or worse when you DO want to do both things, as is the case tonight!

Primrose Petals & Papillion Potpurri

Just a quick, pretty card today, one we'll be making tonight at my friend Theresa's workshop. I think the girlfriends will love playing with the new coordinating butterfly punch and Papillion Potpurri, along with the Delicate Designs lace trim embossing folder for the Big Shot.
We'll also be making a Christmas card... hard to believe, but it's time to start thinking about what you're going to make this year and plan your orders accordingly! There's still time to have a party before the holiday season kicks in, and you and your friends can get together and try some fun new techniques and layouts and get your hands on the products from the 2012 Holiday Catalog, too.

Welcome back to 31 Pages in 31 Days, my summer blog series! Alas, summer is officially at a close now, as our parent-teacher orientation is this evening... and school starts Monday! How could the summer possibly be over already--it just started! What a busy one it was, too...

Today's page is another one of those "let's turn this old card into a scrapbook theme" moments, only this time I used a Make N Take project from the last Founder's Circle Retreat. It had the cutest Tea Shoppe theme, and we made this cute pull-out, tea-bag inspired party invite that was of course far too adorable to give away. Hee hee! So now it's preserved forever in my memory album on this fun vintage page.

The background of this page (Naturals Composition specialty Designer Series Paper) is sponge, smudged, smooshed, spritzed and Smooched. Excellent stress-relieving project, this... whenever you're really hacked at someone, you can take it out on paper--and the paper looks awesome!

I mentioned wax paper embossing before--you recall it is acid-free and photo safe--love the delicate glassine look of the die-cut butterly wings made on the Big Shot with the new Fancy Fan embossing folder. FYI, the Naturals Composition papers are NOT acid-free, so make sure you have a mat between your photos and the background page. Word to the wise!

Save the date! Spring Crafting Retreat

I had such a fabulous time this past weekend with this lovely group of ladies! we look like a rainbow in this picture, don't we? We were near scenic Cambridge, Wisconsin, right on the CamRock State Park trail system, at a gorgeous new retreat house called Craftin' By the Creek. I can honestly say this is the best retreat house I have been to, and I give it my highest reccomendation. Steve and Carrie are new owners (we were only the third group to stay there) but they have taken great pains to ensure our utter comfort and crafting convenience.They even had a fire laid for us outside on the patio, and when we asked if there were marshmallow sticks, they went out and bought some and delivered them to us!

Steve is a talented cabinet-maker and all of the gorgeous wood in the house is his own work. The house is just like a piece of art! And the craft area is separated from the bedroom area, so you can nap in peace and people can stay up as late as they want without bothering anyone. The kitchen was so beautiful, it was just a joy to work in and even made clean up enjoyable. And the landscping in the gardens, deck and patio areas were just lovely--can't imagine them in a non-drought year!

I came home from the retreat and booked two for 2013 the very next day, I was so pleased! Save the date for March 21st-24th, 2013, and details will be released in late fall. Hope you can come and spend a power-weekend with us! The other weekend will be September 26th-29th.

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-two

Today's double-page spread is the last of the pages I had my class members make with the Pinwheels on Parade Simply Scrappin' Kit. Each person used just half a kit (actually less than half a kit) and made six pages with the elements, and they will be taking the extras home to let the creativity continue.

Just a simple layout today. The simply Scrappin' Kits excel at making scrapbooking both affordable and quick. The professionally-designed cardstock die-cuts are all self adhesive, and there's a generous number of solid color 12x12 cardstock sheets in addition to the four patterned papers, too. Here's a close up of the pinwheel sticks... you guessed it, they are bamboo skewers!

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty-one

Just ten days left in the 31 Pages in 31 Days blog series challenge! I've enjoyed myself immensely this month, and hope you have had fun, too! if you're just joining us, check out the posts every day of August 2012 for a different scrapbook page or 2-page layout each morning.

Today's single page is a little cheerful Christmas patchwork using the Be of Good Cheer Designer Series Papers.The 2x6 strips are laid semi-randomly across the middle upper portion of the page, to form a mat for the semi-randomly placed Cherry Cobbler photo mats! It's kinda like that carefully achieved "just out of bed" hairstyle that actually takes an hour and two cans of hairspray, huh?

Now, I LOVE clean design with lots of white space, and if it were up to me I'd have left it at that. Honestly, if money were no object and it didn't look ridiculous in my current house, I'd be very happy with Swedish Modern furniture (think IKEA). BUT, I'm still training my scrapbookers not to think they have to put something in every single corner of their page, so I did go ahead and run a couple of border items across the bottom. The first is a repeated word stamped strip (TIP: A great way to make use of a small stamp that would otherwise be lost on a 12x12 page) and the second elements was the totally adorable new Sweater Trim from the 2012 Holiday Catalog. Too cute!

Do you have a scrapbooking "bad habit" that you find hard to shake? I mean OTHER than the one where you leave the photos in the shoeboxes?? One bad habit I have is to finish the page entirely except for the journalling. I mean, the entire album will be DONE and the journalling boxes will be sitting there blank. For years. 'Cause memory improves with age, you know. NOT!

Baby Tees

I love it when my stash of baby cards gets low! Baby cards are some of my very favoritest to make. I wheeled a whole sheet of the Baby Tees jumbo Stampin' Around Wheel and took it along on my craft retreat last weekend, and spent a relaxing afternoon just coloring and putzing.

I used basically the same materials for them all--the Petite Pennants die and the Fancy Fan embossing folder on the Big Shot, Confetti stamp set for the backgrounds, Whisper White and Sahara Sand as my neutrals, and Bashful Blue and Pink Pirouette card bases. I came up with these five easy pink and blue designs--enjoy!

And I saved my favorite for last... which one is your favorite?

Triple Clipboard photo gift project

I got a couple of things done at the retreat this weekend! I have had these Clearance Rack clipboards in my closet for months now, so one of my goals was to turn them into cute gifts. I made two of these and four photo tray projects and about ten cards, plus worked on our Disney album in My Digital Studio. And relaxed and chatted up a storm, of course!

The idea is that you clip a couple of photos to these and write a note on the third one. I love up-cycling clipboards--something so utilitarian turns into a great gift that's both pretty and practical.

31 Pages in 31 Days: day twenty

Welcome back to another installment of 31 Pages in 31 Days! I'm actually ahead of the game since some of the days I've been posting double-page spreads, but whatever! This page is just a quick one for my Natalie girl, who is indeed very girly! And terribly fun to take photos of. It is so fun to watch her develop her own sense of fashion. She has decided opinions on color, just like someone else I know...

I used Floral District Designer Series Papers for the base, and drew my color scheme directly from it--Baja Breeze, Rich Razzleberry, Pretty in Pink and Rose Red. Those sure are cute papers! I'd be hard-pressed to pick my favorite of the patterns. I embellished it with Twitterpated buttons in Baja Breeze, Rose Red seam binding ribbon, and a little paper circle flower. The new Notable Alphabet added just the right touch of whimsy.
