We're making this card at all my clubs during October, and it's been such a hit I wanted to share it with you all. I've seen sunburst style cards out there before, and I thought that the way I figured out to make them must be the way everyone was doing it--only to find out many of you are doing it a much harder way! Here's a super easy way to make these gorgeous "irrregular sunburst"-style cards with NO math and NO measuring! My kind of project.
To start with, you'll need four identically-sized pieces of patterned paper, and your paper trimmer (view the trimmer I love here!) I used my favorite pattern right now, Eastern Elegance. The size of your paper depends on whether or not you want it to cover the whole card front, or just a part. My four papers were cut to 3.5x5 inches.
Stack your four pieces of patterned paper on top of each other. All the cuts we're going to make will be cutting through all four layers at once, so make sure you press hard enough when using your Paper Trimmer.
Either measure to find the center, or just eyeball it.... the center of a 5-inch wide piece is going to be 2.5. You can make a little pencil mark there if you want to, but eyeballing works just fine.
Slide your stack of papers so it's at an angle to the cutting groove. It does NOT matter what the angle is; only that all the cuts radiate out from the center point. Make your first cut starting from that center mark on the bottom and ending off the left hand side. Always return back to that center point to start your cutting.
See how we made another slice, originating from that middle point, and headed off towards the top left? Now we'll make a third cut, this one starting in the middle point and heading upwards and a little to the right.
Remember to keep pressing down firmly enough that your stack doesn't move, number one, and your cuts are going all the way through all four layers, number two.
Make your final cut headed off the right hand side of the stack, again, originating from that center point.
If you've followed along, your stack should now look like the photo above. Now, we'll pretend we're putting together a puzzle, and use one piece from each stack to put back together into a sunburst.
Because you had four different patterns of paper, there's enough to reconstruct four separate sunbursts. So from one set of cuts, you have enough to make four cards! WIN!
I adhered my 3.5x5-inch sunburst to a Whisper White piece measuring 3.75x5 inches, then onto a Smoky Slate mat measuring 5.25x4 inches, then onto the card base, a regular 8.5x5.5 inch piece of Crushed Curry cardstock. I added a "belt" of Smoky Slate cut one quarter-inch by 5.25 inches, and five little flowers made with the Itty Bitty Punch Pack and then 7/8 inch scallop circle punch. The saying is stamped in Smoky Slate and came from the A Dozen Thoughts stamp set.
There you have it! Simple and stunning... I hope you'll try this easy irregular-sunburst card at home, and leave me a comment if you enjoy the free tutorials here at Song of My Heart Stampers. I never charge for inspiration, so your comments are what keep me motivated and posting. Make my day and leave one!
