Photo Tutorial: Ombre Resist Technique

I was messing around in the stamp room this weekend, and have something fun to show for it! Grab your specialty pre-embossed papers, some baby wipes and your favorite colors of ink. We're learning the Ombre Resist Technique today!

This is a messy technique--if you're worried about your nails, snag some latex gloves, or you'll regret it. My nails are a lost cause.

I also use my 12x12 granite floor tile, a non-porous surface, to do this technique, because the ink is going to get on the table. So make sure yours is covered, or cleanable, or you don't care about it!

If it's a light color of ink, or your pad wasn't very wet when you started, you may want to repeat this step a couple of times to get the depth of color you want and really make that pattern POP. Regardless of how wet it was when you began, you will need to re-ink the pad when you're finished with this project. You DID remember to order the ink refills for your pads, right?

Most people use sponges for resist techniques--I use baby wipes. They still dry very quickly, but the extra moisture in them helps spread the ink more smoothly and helps it stay wet longer, so you have more time to adjust for mistakes and missing areas.

And they're dirt cheap. So that's a big win! Plus, you can use the baby wipe to easily wipe off your tile or surface--AND your hands.

Depending on how much ink you put on initially, how long you waited before you began to use the baby wipe, and how far out you took the ink towards the edges of the card, you can get totally different looks!

For this formal wedding card, I used Pool Party ink to form a crisp edge, and let most of it soak totally in. Then I used the baby wipe to bring the ink just barely off the stripe in a kind of "drop shadow" look. I wish you could see how pretty this is in person--the "love" is die-cut from the Sunshine Wishes Thinlets in Dazzlin' Diamonds glimmer paper. So elegant!

Thank you so much for sharing this technique! I love blending colors on embossed cardstock and have, of course, particularly loved the specialty DSP for this (so easy!), but had never considered using a damp paper towel. I took your technique a step further, and gathered four damp paper towels, four reinkers (melon mambo, daffodil, pacific point and tempting turquoise). I placed 2-3 drops of ink on a paper towel and just blended away. The result is beautiful, the color more saturated than if I used a sponge, and the color blending was perfect.
